The Cocoa Beach Pier was the place to be on Sunday afternoon for Off Shore Powerboat racing as the rooster tails were flying just off the beach. The 1st Annual Thunder on the Beach Superboat Grand Prix descended on the Space Coast with the weekend event culminating with two races on Sunday. Twenty of the world’s fastest power boats roared along the beach just yards from shore as thousands of beach goers picked their colorful favorites. The boats, along with their two man crews, made their way from the pit area in Port Canaveral to the 5 ½ mile race course, which stretched from the Pier down to Lori Wilson Park. Pleasure boaters and charter fishing boats lined the race course, and swimmers and sunbathers marveled from shore, as the powerful boats rumbled along the Atlantic. May of 2011 will bring the next Super Boat races to Cocoa Beach, and judging from the excitement generated this year, make plans now to be there!!
